I'm one of thousands participating in The Sketchbook Project 2011 Tour. We've all been sent blank moleskine sketchbooks and asked to fill 'em up with art and send back to become part of the permanent collection of The Brooklyn Art Library in New York. The best part is that the entire collection is touring museums and galleries around the country and will be available for public viewing. If it the collection comes to your city, be sure and check it out.
The theme I've chosen for my sketchbook is Socialites and Bums. I'll elaborate more about it in a future post, but basically I'm doing random portraits of interesting people spotted in the San Francisco streets, shiny rich folk I see at crashed social events, society portraits in glossy magazines, or weirdos I trip upon while surfing the Internet. Some drawings are done live while sitting in cafes, others are done in my art studio while using reference photos I take of my subjects when I spot them. IMAGE ONE: Wasting time on one of those funny mug shot sites, I came across this wild-eyed hissing meth snake with some sort of brill creamed mullet/pompadour. He was so compelling, I had to draw him twice. IMAGE TWO: Pouty girl on left found on mug shot site, pouty girl on right spotted at a gallery opening. Medium: graphite, acrylic and gouache in moleskine sketchbook.
Much thanks to those who offered support, sympathy and smiles during my recent absence. I've been dealing with some really painful events and passings in my life, but your kindness and humor has made the healing process so much easier. It's good to be back making art! Much love, xoxo 14.
